Preserve Your Vision with Expert Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Treatment
Your central vision allows you to read a text message, recognize a loved one’s face, and drive with confidence. When that vision begins to blur or distort, it can feel unsettling. A common cause of vision loss is age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
At Retina Consultants, P.C., we specialize in diagnosing and treating age-related macular degeneration. Without proper treatment, this progressive eye disease can affect the macula, leading to vision loss. Don’t wait for vision loss to occur. What is AMD?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the primary cause of vision loss in adults aged 50 and older. It typically affects the macula, the central part of the retina that helps with sharp, detailed vision.
AMD occurs in two forms:
- Dry AMD: It’s the more common form, accounting for over 90% of AMD cases. It develops slowly as the macula becomes thinner and accumulates small yellow deposits called drusen. Vision changes may begin subtly, including blurred central vision, difficulty reading in low light, or a need for brighter illumination. Dry AMD can progress into the more severe wet AMD, making early intervention crucial.
- Wet AMD: Although less common, it is more aggressive. Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak blood and fluid, causing rapid distortion of central vision. As the disease progresses, the abnormal blood vessels may damage the retina, causing blind spots. Without prompt treatment, wet AMD can cause permanent vision loss.

How do I know I have age-related macular degeneration?
The specific symptoms depend on whether you have wet or dry AMD. Generally, the AMD symptoms include:
- Challenges with reading, even with glasses
- Changed color perception
- Blurred vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
- A dark, empty, or shadowy spot in your central vision
- Increased need for bright light when reading or doing close work
- Trouble recognizing faces
Early detection is critical. If you notice any changes in your vision, visit our retina office immediately. The sooner we identify disease progression, the more effectively we can intervene.

What are the treatment options for AMD?
At our office, we offer specialized treatment to halt the progression of AMD and preserve your vision. For dry AMD, management focuses on slowing progression. Antioxidant supplements (AREDS2 formulation), lifestyle adjustments, and close monitoring are key components.
For wet AMD, treatment is highly specialized and often includes:
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT): Your retina specialist uses laser-activated medication to target the abnormal blood vessels in the retina.
- Anti-VEGF injections: The doctor administers anti-VEGF drugs into the blood vessels to suppress vascular growth.
These therapies have dramatically changed the outlook for patients with wet AMD. Many individuals maintain functional vision for years with consistent, expert care.
