Preserve Your Vision with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Age Related Macular Degeneration Treatment in Connecticut area

When it comes to protecting your vision, expertise matters. At Retina Consultants, P.C., our retina specialists are board-certified, fellowship-trained, and highly experienced in diagnosing and treating complex retinal disease. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the advanced, highly specialized treatments we offer to preserve vision and prevent the progression of severe eye conditions. If you’d like to learn how photodynamic therapy can save your vision, visit any of our offices in Cromwell, Farmington, Hartford, Manchester, and Enfield, Connecticut.

What is photodynamic therapy?

PDT is a highly advanced procedure used to stop abnormal bleeding from retinal blood vessels. The procedure combines a cold laser and a light-sensitive dye (Verteporfin). One of our retina specialists administers the medication through an IV line and travels to the abnormal vessels in the eye. A carefully calibrated laser then activates the drug, selectively sealing the problematic vessels while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. To preserve your vision, your eye doctor can use PDT as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with intravitreal injections of specific drugs.

What conditions can it treat?

Your Hartford retina specialist may use photodynamic therapy to manage:

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD): PDT is an excellent option for patients with wet AMD who don’t respond to anti-VEGF injections.
  • Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR): CSCR causes fluid buildup in the eye, which can cause vision loss without proper treatment. PDT has an over 85% success rate for managing CSCR. In case treatment isn’t successful, the doctor will recommend another round of treatment.
  • Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV): Combining PDT and anti-VEGF injections targets and closes abnormal blood vessel networks beneath the retina.

These are complex retinal diseases that demand subspecialty care. Our retinal specialists carefully evaluate each case to determine whether PDT is the most effective approach or if combination therapy may provide the best outcome.

What are the benefits of photodynamic therapy?

PDT offers several advantages:

  • Targets abnormal vessels with high precision.
  • Minimizes damage to the surrounding retinal tissue.
  • Can slow or stabilize vision loss, often used as a “rescue therapy” when other treatments fail.
  • Often performed in an outpatient setting.
  • May reduce the need for more invasive procedures.

For many patients, the goal is stabilization, preventing further vision decline, and protecting long-term sight. Whether PDT can restore vision varies from person to person, depending on the extent of damage and the cause.

Are there any complications of PDT?

Yes! As with any medical procedure, PDT has some risks, including:

  • A mild decrease in vision (blurry vision) for a few weeks after treatment.
  • Inflammatory reaction to verteporfin, especially when it leaks to the surrounding vein. In rare cases, this may cause scarring.
  • Sensitivity to light for the first 48 hours.
  • Temporary lower back pain, but it subsides when the infusion is complete.

In some cases, PDT can fail. Your Connecticut retina specialist will administer an in-depth assessment before treatment to determine if PDT is the best treatment for your case. If not, they will recommend alternatives to preserve your vision.

How much does photodynamic therapy cost in Connecticut?

The cost of PDT varies depending on your diagnosis, treatment plan, and insurance coverage. Many medically necessary retinal treatments are covered by insurance. Our team will review your coverage in detail and provide transparent cost information before proceeding. Feel free to ask any questions about your billing.
