Clinical Trials: Advancing Retinal Care Through Research
Retina Consultants, P.C. is committed not only to treating eye disease but also to shaping the future of retinal care. One of the most meaningful ways we do that is through our robust clinical trial program. Our program provides patients access to nationwide clinical trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and many of the nation’s leading biotechnology companies.
What is clinical research?
Clinical research is the process of studying new treatments, devices, or approaches to care in humans. Before a therapy can be approved, it must go through years of testing. Clinical trials are the final and most crucial stage. They enable researchers to assess the safety and effectiveness of a new treatment when used in real patients. Clinical trials adhere to strict rules established by the FDA, ethics boards, and scientific guidelines to ensure participant safety.

Why are clinical trials important?
Research is the engine that drives medical progress. Every medication, injection, eye drop, and imaging system used today began as a clinical trial. Without research, care would never improve. Many of the therapies used in modern retina clinics, such as long-acting implants and advanced anti-VEGF medications, were made possible because people like you volunteered to participate in research studies.
Despite modern breakthroughs in treating ocular diseases, further clinical research is still needed. Many conditions, such as macular degeneration, intraocular cancers, and inherited retinal disorders, currently have limited treatment options. Research helps develop new solutions and gives hope to patients who may not respond to standard care.
How do I participate?
Clinical trials provide patients with the opportunity to receive next-generation therapies before they are widely available, all at no cost. Every clinical trial is voluntary, and you are never required to join. Still, many patients choose to take part because they want to make a difference for themselves and for future generations.
Eligibility for participation is determined through a screening process that differs from one study to another. Due to the nature of your disease, not everyone is a suitable candidate for participation. If you are ineligible, our retina specialists will continue providing the highest level of eye care available.

How long will the study take?
Study duration varies. Some trials last a few months. Others may follow patients for a year or more. You will always know the timeline in advance. Our team will help you plan your visits so participation fits your lifestyle.
Are there any risks involved?
All medical treatments carry some level of risk, and clinical trials are no different. The objective of research is to learn and develop treatments whose outcomes aren’t known from the start. However, safety is always the top priority. Experts carefully review every study, and patients are monitored closely. We will fully inform you about any potential risks before enrolling.
