Trust Retina Consultants, P.C. with Precise Intravitreal Injections
If you’ve been told you need an intravitreal injection, it is normal to feel anxiety, or even fear, of ‘eye injections’. Rest assured, intravitreal injections are one of the most effective and safest treatments for many retinal conditions. At Retina Consultants, P.C., our top-rated retina specialists perform the largest number of eye injections in the state of Connecticut. These procedures are very well tolerated when treated with an appropriate anesthetic. With our skill and precision, you can trust that your vision is in expert hands.
What is an intravitreal injection?
An intravitreal injection is a shot of medicine placed into the eye in a specific location just adjacent to the colored part of your pupil. This procedure releases medication into the vitreous cavity, which is the gel-like substance that fills the eye – like air in a basketball. This allows the medicine to reach the retina quickly and work where it’s needed most. These injections help treat several eye-related conditions and can help protect your vision lifelong. These medications, when used appropriately, are highly effective and very well tolerated.

What conditions may need an intravitreal injection?
Intravitreal injections are commonly used to manage several eye conditions, including:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): An eye disorder characterized by loss of central vision over time.
- Diabetic Retinopathy: An eye condition marked by abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina, commonly seen in patients with diabetes.
- Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO): A blockage of retinal veins that causes blood and fluid to leak into the retina, affecting your vision.
- Macular Edema: Irregular swelling of the macula, a part of your eye responsible for sharp, central vision.
- Infectious or inflammatory eye diseases: Intravitreal injections can address infections such as uveitis and endophthalmitis, characterized by swelling of the eyes.
If not treated promptly, these conditions can lead to vision loss. The injections reduce swelling, stop abnormal blood vessel growth, or control inflammation, to protect your sight.
What can I expect during intravitreal injections?
Injections into your eye may sound intimidating, but most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable the procedure is. Our experienced retina specialists perform it as an outpatient procedure.
First, your doctor will gently numb your eye with a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. The area around your eyelids will then be cleaned with a special solution to maintain a sterile environment. In some instances a small speculum is used to support the eyelids during the procedure.
Before administering the injection, your doctor will ask you to look in a specific direction to ensure precise placement. The medication is then carefully injected through the white part of your eye, known as the pars plana. Most patients experience only a brief sensation of pressure or mild discomfort, without any sharp pain. The injection itself is typically completed in 30 seconds or less, and you can return home shortly after.

What can I expect after an intravitreal injection?
After your injection, you may notice some mild redness on the white part of your eye. This happens when a small amount of blood collects under the clear surface (subconjunctival hemorrhage). Rest assured, it looks worse than it feels and usually clears up on its own. Your eye may feel slightly gritty or watery for about a day. You might also see a few floaters within the first 24 hours.
We recommend avoiding driving after your appointment, as your vision may be temporarily affected. Our staff will review post-treatment instructions in detail at your appointment.
