Luis Martinez-Velazquez MD, PhD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous. He completed his residency and two–year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, where he served as Chief Fellow and was awarded the 2024-2025 Thomas J. Madden Fellowship in Retina—the highest honor bestowed upon a vitreoretinal fellow by the department.
After finishing his training, he served as a staff ophthalmologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, where he also supervised and taught ophthalmology residents and medical students. He has served as Principal Investigator on research studies funded by the National Eye Institute and his work has been published in leading journals including Retina, Ophthalmology Retina, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He has presented nationally and internationally, received honors such as the prestigious Heed Fellowship, and has been recognized by the National Eye Institute with a “Meet our Experts’ profile”.
He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Martinez-Velazquez has experience with all elements of medical and surgical retina, including complex retinal detachments, insertion of secondary intraocular lenses, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration.
