Understanding Medical Oncology and Eye-Detected Tumors

Sometimes, the first signs of cancer appear in the eye. Tumors, such as choroidal melanoma, can be detected during a routine eye examination. While the tumor may seem isolated, it may actually indicate the presence of disease elsewhere in the body. In other cases, the eye reveals cancer that has already started in another organ. The most common metastases found in the eye come from undiagnosed liver, breast, or prostate cancer.

At Retina Consultants, P.C., we collaborate with our medical oncology associates across the state to ensure that patients receive comprehensive care. Early detection and a coordinated approach are critical for the best outcomes.

What is medical oncology?

Medical oncology is the branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating cancer in the eye with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or immunotherapy. In addition we work closely with medical oncology to treat any cancer that has started from or spread through the body.

For patients whose cancer is first detected in the eye, medical oncology plays a crucial role. Even a small tumor in the eye may signal systemic disease. A thorough evaluation ensures that no other organs are overlooked.

What is our approach to medical oncology?

Once a tumor is detected in the eye, medical oncologists perform a full-body scan. These tests assess whether the cancer has spread to other areas and identify organs that may be at risk of metastasis. Common imaging techniques include CT scans, MRI, and PET scans.

Treating ocular cancers involves a close collaboration with a team of experts. We work closely with our associates in medical oncology and radiation oncology across the state. At Hartford Hospital we have established a comprehensive ocular oncology program that provides the best possible care in these cases. Besides full body scanning, complex cases are often reviewed at a “tumor board.” This is a collective meeting that brings together specialists in surgical, radiation, and medical oncology. Each patient’s case is thoroughly reviewed to create a personalized treatment plan.

The tumor board approach ensures that every perspective is considered. It enables the integration of multiple therapies—surgery, radiation, and systemic treatment—into a single, cohesive plan. This collaboration helps provide the patient with the best possible chance for success.

What treatments does medical oncology involve?

Treating cancer depends on the type, location, and stage of the tumor. Possible treatment options include chemotherapy, targeted therapies, surgical excision, radiation treatment, and immunotherapy, or a combination of these approaches.

Medical oncology also involves ongoing follow-up. Patients are closely monitored to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and to detect any new tumors. Adjustments can be made as needed, ensuring care is flexible and responsive to the patient’s condition.

Why does early detection matter?

Finding cancer in the eye often provides a unique opportunity for early intervention. Because the tumor can be the first sign of systemic disease, early detection enables a coordinated approach that may improve prognosis and quality of life.

When Retina Consultants, P.C., detects eye tumors, we connect you with the right specialists. We collaborate with medical and radiation oncologists to provide comprehensive care, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up. The objective is to ensure you don’t have to navigate the journey alone.
