Photobiomodulation: A Promising Therapy for Retinal Health
Photobiomodulation is an exciting, non-invasive therapy that is transforming the way we support retinal health. Retina Consultants, P.C., is proud to offer this innovative treatment across two of our locations in Connecticut, one on each side of the river (Farmington and Manchester). Patients appreciate that it is gentle, painless, and backed by growing scientific evidence. If you are looking for new options to protect or improve your vision, see the future more clearly with innovative photobiomodulation.
What is photobiomodulation?
Light holds more healing power than you think, particularly for your eye health. Photobiomodulation (PBM) or Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular repair. These wavelengths penetrate the retina and help energize the mitochondria (the powerhouse of your cells). When mitochondria function better, the retinal cells become more resilient. PBM has also been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in cells.

What should I expect during treatment?
This light-based therapy has been studied for years, but recent advances have made it more precise and more effective. The treatment is comfortable and non-invasive—it doesn’t involve injections or pupil dilation. You sit comfortably while a specialized device delivers light to the eyes. It does not burn or cut. Instead, it gently boosts the retina’s natural ability to heal.
Several treatments are needed over a three to five-week period. These are followed by sessions every four months. Your retina specialist will advise on the number of sessions required to achieve the best results.
Who needs photobiomodulation?
Research shows that photobiomodulation can benefit several retinal conditions. One of the most well-known is dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Dry AMD slowly damages the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision.
Photobiomodulation may also help patients with early retinal degenerative diseases. These conditions often involve stressed or weakened cells. PBM supports these cells, enabling them to continue functioning for a longer period.
Some patients with diabetic eye disease may also benefit from PBM as part of a broader management plan. Since diabetes can affect blood flow and oxygen levels in the retina, PBM’s ability to improve cellular energy may offer support. While it doesn’t cure retinal diseases, PBM helps slow their progression and reduce the risk of further vision loss.

What are the benefits of photobiomodulation?
Light therapy isn’t a new idea. It has long been used for pain relief, skin care, and muscle recovery. If you have had light therapy before, PBM is similar, except that it involves the eyes and is clinically studied to ensure the precise wavelengths required for effective retinal stimulation are used.
Here are the benefits of low-level laser therapy:
- It’s a painless procedure
- It’s non-invasive—it doesn’t require needles or incisions
- Sessions are quick, usually lasting only a few minutes per eye
- Photobiomodulation uses low-level light, which is safe even when repeated many times
