What is radiotherapy for eye cancer?

Radiation oncology uses carefully targeted radiation to treat tumors inside the eye, such as choroidal melanoma. Ocular radiotherapy utilizes high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancerous cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy cells. Unlike traditional surgery, this approach can often save the eye and maintain vision while controlling or eliminating the tumor.
For ocular melanoma, radiotherapy is typically administered in the following ways:
- Brachytherapy: A small radioactive disc (plaque) will be placed on the outside of the eye. It’s the most common way of delivering radiotherapy for eye cancers. It’s used to treat small to medium-sized tumors in areas that can be accessed to attach the disc.
- External radiotherapy: This delivers high-energy rays from a machine to target the cancer cells. Two options of external radiotherapy include proton beam and stereotactic radiotherapy.
After treatment, your oncology team will discuss the side effects you can expect. Immediate side effects include double vision, swollen eyes, and dry eyes. Possible long-term or late side effects include cloudiness (cataracts) and eye pain. Sometimes, cataract surgery, laser therapy, and ocular injections may be necessary to improve the side effects.
How long does ocular radiotherapy take?
Treatment length depends on the type and size of the tumor. For most patients, radiation therapy typically lasts one to two weeks, although some may require a slightly longer or shorter schedule.
Before treatment begins, our team performs detailed imaging and planning to ensure accuracy. Each session typically lasts less than an hour, and most patients are discharged the same day.
What is the success rate for ocular radiation therapy?
Radiation therapy for eye cancer has a high success rate in controlling tumor growth. In most cases, treatment can save the eye and preserve partial or full vision. While individual results vary, studies show that radiation therapy is effective in managing more than 90% of ocular melanomas.
